MICHIGAN – McDonald’s owner operators throughout Michigan will be raising funds for local high school athletics on October 21. During the High School Digital Fundraiser Day, high schools across Michigan will earn 20 percent of all sales purchased through the McDonald’s app.

Area schools in the Greater Lansing area to get a boost from from McDonalds include: Lansing Eastern, Haslett, Grand Ledge, Perry, Potterville, Leslie, and Charlotte.

This year marks the second time Michigan schools are celebrating High School Sports Digital Fundraiser Day. McDonald’s owner/operators in Ohio came up with the fundraiser as a way to support the high school athletics in the communities they serve.  Each locally owned McDonald’s restaurant has chosen a high school in their community to donate 20 percent of all digital sales on October 21. Each identified high school will receive a minimum of $250.

“We are proud to be continuing this partnership with our local schools,” said McDonald’s Owner/Operator Shawn Saputo. “We’ve seen lots of success with the fundraiser in our restaurants, and have received great feedback from schools, too. Our hope is that the local communities will continue to come out and support their local schools, and help us make the High School Sports Digital Fundraiser Day a success throughout the state.”

The McDonald’s app is available for download in the Apple App Store and the Android Google Play Store. With the McDonald’s app, customers get access to exclusive deals, they can order ahead and pass the line with Mobile Order & Pay, plus they can join MyMcDonald’s Rewards to earn points on every order to redeem for free McDonald’s.

As always, customers can customize their orders to match their personal taste preferences, including asking for no onions or pickles, or holding the sauce on their favorite burger.

Detroit broke it open with four runs in the 7th inning. Wenceel Pérez singled in two, then came around to score on a Riley Greene RBI single.

The Guardians answered with two runs in the 8th after a throwing error by reliever Will Vest, but he settled down and retired the side in the 9th to lock down the win.

With the victory, the Tigers continue their pursuit of a World Series Championship, and now advance to face the Seattle Mariners in a best-of-five showdown.

HOLT – For Holt High senior Molly Root, wrestling isn’t just about the grind on the mat, it’s about fun, growth, and the lessons she carries with her off the mat. Competing in the 100-pound division, Root has become a determined member of the Lady Rams wrestling team, balancing her passion for competition with the demands of being a student-athlete.

Root first stepped into the sport because she wanted to try something new and exciting. “Just to get into a sport that was fun and seeing people do it,” she said of her inspiration. That decision has blossomed into a steady commitment fueled by the guidance of her biggest influence, Coach Jim Hafke.

What Root loves most is the thrill of competition. “Going to tournaments,” she said without hesitation. But the road hasn’t been without challenges. She admits that “taking shots” has been her toughest hurdle so far, though she continues to push herself to improve in that area.

Her first match remains a vivid memory, “a lot of hand fighting and defense,” she recalled, adding that despite the nerves, “it felt good.” One of her proudest moments came when she was able to hold her own against a wrestler who placed fourth in the state. “Being able to stay with a girl that took 4th in State,” she said, is something she’ll always carry as motivation.

This fall, Root will take her wrestling journey to a whole new level. She has been selected to represent Team USA Women’s Beach Wrestling at the Beach Wrestling World Championships in Katerini, Greece, September 25–26, where she will compete in the 45kg division.

“I’m incredibly honored and excited to share that I’ve been selected to represent Team USA Women’s Beach Wrestling this year!” Root said. “To be able to step onto the world stage and compete against the best in the world means so much to me.”

But the opportunity comes with challenges off the mat as well. “What many people don’t realize is that at the world level, all costs are the responsibility of the athletes. That means travel, lodging, and competition fees are all out-of-pocket,” she explained.

To make this dream possible, Root is reaching out to the community for support. “Whether it’s a sponsorship or a personal donation, any amount helps and goes directly toward getting me to Greece to compete against the best in the world,” she said. “Your support not only helps cover expenses, but also allows me to proudly represent our community and country on the international stage.”

Back home, Root continues to train with the Lady Rams. A typical week is demanding: drilling, live wrestling, and running. But she embraces the work, especially with her teammates by her side. “We don’t give up,” she said of the Rams’ identity on the mat.

She admires her coach’s relentless approach, which often echoes in her own attitude toward the sport. “Just wrestle, don’t think, and keep moving through things,” she recalled of his advice. “If you try to stop, he will make you keep doing it until you get it down.”

On the mat, Root favors her signature move, the “head inside single dump.” Off the mat, she’s just as relatable as any high schooler, laughing at a time when an opponent unexpectedly shot at her ankles, sending her straight to her back, or imagining karaoke nights where her teammate Shea would belt out “Party in the USA.”

If wrestling had walkout music like boxing or MMA, Root says hers might be “a song by Ice.” Away from wrestling, she enjoys English class, dreams of attending Davenport University, and likes unwinding with tennis. When it comes to food, Wing Stop tops the list, and she hopes to one day travel to Hawaii.

For now, Root is focused on her dual journey: finishing strong as a Holt senior and preparing to step onto the world stage in Greece. Her advice for anyone looking to start wrestling reflects the same grit she carries with her to the mat: “It can be hard at first, but you will get it eventually, and it is really fun,” Root said.

The event, powered by Biggby Coffee, gave Spartan fans the chance to take pictures with head coach Jonathan Smith, get autographs from the entire 2025 Michigan State football team, and visit the field at Spartan Stadium. The event also featured numerous fan activities throughout the entire concourse of the stadium.

The annual “Meet the Spartans” event ran for 17 straight years in August from 2003-19 before getting canceled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Last April, the Spartans took pictures and signed autographs prior to the program’s 2024 Spring Showcase in Spartan Stadium.

EAST LANSING, MI —  The Spartans had no answer for Notre Dame’s Annabelle Chukwu (#7) on Thursday night at DeMartin Stadium. The sophomore striker scored all three goals to complete a hat trick, while goalkeeper Sonoma Kasica (#28) turned away every chance to post the shutout. The No. 5 Fighting Irish blanked Michigan State, 3–0, improving to 5-0-1 on the season and extending their streak of not allowing a goal to four straight matches.

Offensively, Maick Collado (1B – #7) went 3-for-5 with a single, double, and triple, while Jaison O’Neal Chourio (DH – #8) led the way with a 4-for-6 day, including a double and a three-run homer. Jose Devers (SS – #10) and Ryan Cesarini (RF – #27) each added 3-for-6 performances.

On the mound, Rafe Schlesinger (#24) earned the win (1–1) for Lake County, while Tzu-Chen Sha (#29) took the loss for Lansing (1–5).

The Lugnuts now look ahead to the 2026 season, with hopes of building on their winning home mark and continuing to bring exciting baseball to Mid-Michigan.

LANSING – The Lansing Sports Commission announced on June 6, 2025 it had hired Lindsay Fast to the team as Sports Services Manager.

 “Lindsay brings a great mix of professionalism, sports experience, and genuine hospitality to our team,” said Meghan Ziehmer, executive director of the Lansing Sports Commission. “Her passion for people and events will be a huge asset as we continue to elevate the athlete and visitor experience in Greater Lansing.”

Fast brings over six seasons of experience as Executive Secretary and Office Manager for the Michigan State University Hockey program, where she was instrumental in managing operations and coordinating high-profile events. She is known for her exceptional organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to create meaningful, memorable experiences.

 A proud Spartan, Fast earned her bachelor’s degree in marketing from Michigan State University. She and her husband, a former professional hockey player and current MSU Hockey Assistant Coach, had the unique opportunity to live abroad before returning to East Lansing in 2011.

In her new role, Fast will support the planning and execution of local sporting events and help drive operational excellence across the organization.
