WILLIAMSTON, MI — Latino Leaders for Equity Advocacy & Development (LLEAD) will host its 5th Annual Golf Fundraiser on Friday, August 1, at Wheatfield Valley Golf Course in Williamston. The event brings together community leaders, local businesses, and advocates in support of LLEAD’s mission to empower Latino communities across Michigan through leadership, equity, and civic engagement.

LLEAD is a Michigan-based organization of LatinX community leaders from many walks of life, and we bring a voice to Michigan Latinos! We love Michigan and are passionate about improving life for Latinos in the Mitten state. As a state-wide organization, we have chapters in Adrian, Bay City, Flint, Grand Rapids, Holland, Lansing, Saginaw, SE Michigan/Greater Detroit.

The annual fundraiser has become one of LLEAD’s signature events, helping raise vital funds for scholarships, youth development programs, and advocacy initiatives aimed at addressing systemic inequalities faced by Latino residents in the state.

“This event is about more than just golf,” said Alberto Flores, state president for LLEAD. “It’s a celebration of community, resilience, and collective action to build a more inclusive future, and it’s one of the few golf outings that is Latino based. We try to get people out here to connect.”

The tournament is open to the public, with registration available for individual players and teams on the website at www.LLEAD.org. In addition to 18 holes of golf, the day will feature on-course contests, raffles, and an awards ceremony following the event. Local businesses and community partners are also encouraged to get involved through sponsorship opportunities, which include hole signage, brand promotion, and the chance to contribute raffle prizes or hospitality services.

Past fundraisers have helped LLEAD expand its outreach and programming in areas such as voter education, policy advocacy, and mentorship for Latino youth.

“This is a chance to not only enjoy a day on the course, but to stand with us in building leadership and opportunity for the next generation,” Flores said. “We are here to help Michigan.”

Wheatfield Valley Golf Club, located just outside Lansing, provides a scenic and welcoming setting for the tournament. Organizers recommend early registration, as space is limited and demand for the event continues to grow each year.

DETROIT — The Jalen Rose Leadership Academy  hosted its 15th Annual Celebrity Golf Classic recently, at the Detroit Golf Club, drawing sports legends, entertainers, and community leaders together in support of educational excellence in the city.

The two-day event is JRLA’s flagship fundraiser, benefitting the tuition-free public charter high school founded by former NBA star and ESPN analyst Jalen Rose. Attendees included Isiah Thomas, Calvin “Megatron” Johnson, and Tobias Harris, all joining the mission to uplift Detroit’s youth through access to quality education.

A major highlight of the event was the announcement of a transformational gift: Henry Ford Health is donating its former Kingswood Hospital facility to JRLA.
