As a proud son of Detroit, Mich, raised with deep Mexican-American roots, this journey to Japan began with excitement, and hesitation. In a time when travel under the Trump administration raised questions about how Americans of color might be received abroad, I didn’t know what to expect. Would I be welcomed? Would my ethnicity or the tense political climate back home impact how I was treated?

What I discovered instead was something far more powerful: kindness, curiosity, and a shared love of food, culture, and hospitality.

Day 1: The Long Flight &

a Taste of Japanese Hospitality

The 12-hour flight to Japan immediately introduced me to cultural differences. Instead of a typical hamburger, the airline meal was a patty smothered in mushroom gravy with a side of rice, more meatloaf than McDonald’s. Flight attendants checked in every 10-15 minutes, offering tea, snacks, and smiles. Already, it felt like a country deeply rooted in care and respect.

Day 2–3: Disney Dreams

and a Coca-Cola Mishap

Tokyo Disneyland was magical, hotter than Michigan, but worth every drop of sweat. The Monorail, built exclusively for Disney, made travel easy. Nearly every staff member spoke English, making the park feel incredibly accessible. By Day 3, I learned that not everything translates the same: a mislabeled Coca-Cola turned out to be a laxative! Still, DisneySea’s night show fireworks, boats, characters dancing under castle lights made up for any discomfort.

Day 4–5: From Tourist Traps

 to Authentic Tokyo

Moving into Ginza, the real Japan unfolded. English was scarce. Hotel rooms? Tiny. Yet it was here I felt the most welcomed. A translator-turned-tour guide named Scott (@scott_tokyotourguide) showed us the true heart of the city. We ate sandwiches from Family Mart better than many U.S. restaurants. I saw suited Uber drivers, respectful to a fault, refusing to let passengers open their own doors. It felt foreign, but in a beautifully intentional way.

Day 6: Walking Through History

Shibuya’s buzzing streets showed two sides of Japan—samurai traditions and a deep respect for community. Scott explained why people walk on the left in Tokyo (samurai logic!) and the right in Okinawa (merchant culture). We ended the day in Cat Street, walking past luxury boutiques, closed thrift stores, and fashion-forward locals.

Day 7–8: Speed Racing

& Bamboo Climbing

My girlfriend channeled her inner Mario Andretti while go-karting through Tokyo’s packed roads. I struggled to keep up. Later, on a bullet train to Kyoto, I was blown away by efficiency and cleanliness. The following day, the 97-degree heat didn’t stop us from hiking to the iconic Bamboo Forest. Japan’s vending machines, strategically placed and well-stocked, were lifesavers.

This trip began with fear— fear of being judged, of being turned away, of being othered. But from the airline staff to street vendors, tour guides to Uber drivers, Japan offered respect, warmth, and fascination with who I was: a Mexican-American from Detroit traveling the world.

Despite the policies back home, I was never treated as less than.

DETROIT — Running as a write-in candidate in the upcoming mayoral race, longtime community activist Rogelio Landin is proposing an ambitious reimagining of Detroit—coined “Detroit 2.0.” At the heart of his platform is a sweeping annexation plan to absorb 28 distressed communities in Macomb, Oakland, and Wayne counties, aiming to reverse population decline and bolster the city’s economic future.

A Vision of Growth: “More Is More”

Landin frames annexation not as a mere political maneuver but as a strategy to “generate more resources” and restore Detroit’s vibrancy. “Detroit has lost 20,000 people annually over the past 50 years,” he notes, pointing to projections that the regional population will swell by 650,000 immigrants by 2050. He argues that expanding the city boundaries is essential to tapping into that growth.

On his campaign site, “Detroit 2.0” is described as delivering “enhanced, proven solutions to generating more.”

Building on Lifelong

Community Engagement

A Detroit native and Cass Technical High School graduate, Landin brings decades of civic involvement to his campaign. He was an early member of the New Detroit coalition following the 1967 uprising, working to foster economic development, equity, and inclusion. His experience includes advising on neighborhood benefits for major developers, leading local chapters of the League of United Latin American Citizens (LULAC), and advocating for bilingual education during the pivotal Milliken v. Bradley desegregation case.

Policy Priorities Beyond Boundaries

In addition to annexation, Landin supports bringing Detroit Public Schools under mayoral control, linking entrepreneurs to venture capital, and launching a World Trade Center to attract business.

CANTON, OHIO — The Los Angeles Chargers overpowered the Detroit Lions with a dominant 34-7 victory Thursday night in the NFL’s annual Hall of Fame Game, setting the tone for the preseason under bright lights at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium.

Backup quarterback Trey Lance led the Chargers with a sharp performance, completing 13-of-20 passes for 120 yards and two touchdowns. His first scoring toss went to veteran tight end Will Dissly, followed by a connection with rookie receiver KeAndre Lambert‑Smith in the second quarter.

The Chargers offense got early help from special teams and a suffocating defense that forced five turnovers on the night. Detroit fumbled the opening kickoff, setting the tone for what would become a long evening. The Chargers quickly capitalized with a 7-yard touchdown run from rookie running back Kimani Vidal, who added another score in the second half and finished with 37 rushing yards.Defensively, the Chargers were relentless.

Nikko Reed, Tony Jefferson, and Myles Purchase each intercepted Lions quarterbacks, with Purchase returning his pick 60 yards for a touchdown. Detroit’s special teams also faltered, with fumbles by Jakobie Keeney‑James and Grant Stuard leading to more Charger points. The Lions’ lone highlight came in the third quarter when Craig Reynolds powered into the end zone from three yards out to avoid a shutout. But overall, Detroit struggled to gain momentum, with quarterbacks Kyle Allen and Hendon Hooker combining for three interceptions and only one scoring drive.

Despite the lopsided loss, a few Detroit players showed promise. Rookie receiver Dominic Lovett impressed with his route running, special teams versatility, and a clutch fourth-down catch. Defensive back Rock Ya-Sin made several key stops, offering some bright spots in an otherwise frustrating outing.

For the Chargers, the victory offered early validation for new head coach Jim Harbaugh, whose team looked disciplined, aggressive, and well-prepared in all three phases.

While the outcome won’t count in the standings, it gave both teams a valuable first look at depth players and rookies trying to earn their spot. The Lions will look to regroup as they return home to continue preseason preparations, while the Chargers aim to build on their strong start.

The Lions will travel to Atlanta for a Aug. 8 matchup against the Falcons, where they’ll look to bounce back and fine-tune their roster.

DETROIT, MI – The streets of Southwest Detroit were alive with chants and calls for justice as hundreds  participated in the “No Kings” rally and march. The demonstration began with a march down Vernor Highway  and culminated in a powerful rally at Clark Park.

Organized by a coalition of local activists, the event  protested authoritarianism, police violence,

gentrification, and systemic inequality. The phrase “No   Kings” reflected a broader rejection of concentrated  power—whether political, corporate, or police.

At Clark Park, speakers addressed topics including immigration justice, housing rights, and community-led  safety. Local artists performed spoken word, cumbia, and hip-hop, while mutual aid groups handed out food,  water, and educational materials.

The event remained peaceful and community-focused, with organizers emphasizing long-term movement building and solidarity across Detroit.
