LANSING — On a sunny afternoon at Pablo’s Bar and Restaurant, located on 2010 East Michigan Avenue on Lansing’s east side, owner Pablo Maldonado leans back with a smile, reflecting on a journey that spans careers and decades.

From his humble beginnings as a dishwasher in New York City to owning one of Lansing’s most inviting Mexican restaurants, Pablo’s story is one of perseverance, heart, and community.

“I started as a dishwasher 34 years ago,” he recalls. “From there, I became a cook, then a server, and eventually  managed a restaurant. I always dreamed of having my own place.”

After years of hard work, including time as a truck driver, the dream became reality with the opening of his first location in Lansing’s Old Town more than two decades ago. Two years ago, he expanded to the east side when a building opportunity presented itself. With a patio that hosts live music and a bar that evokes the warmth of the Southwest, Pablo’s is more than a restaurant, it’s a destination.

The secret to his success?

“You have to love what you do,” he says. “I love serving people. That’s why they keep coming back.”

At Pablo’s, drinks are made to order, literally. There’s no strict adherence to recipes. “If someone wants a strawberry margarita or one with kiwi or passion fruit and we have the ingredients, we make it,” he shares. “We don’t have to follow rules.”

That flexibility and customer-first attitude are part of what’s made Pablo’s thrive, even in challenging times. The Michigan Avenue construction project has slowed traffic and impacted foot business, but loyal patrons continue  to show up. “We’ve survived because of them,” he says. “And once construction ends, this will be the best  avenue in the city.”

His passion extends beyond the kitchen. As a proud Latino entrepreneur, Pablo acknowledges both the challenges and rewards of business ownership. “There’s nothing that can stop us from achieving our dreams— except our own thinking,” he says.

Pablo’s pride in his team is evident. “We don’t have employees and a boss. We’re a team. I was treated badly  before—I won’t let that happen here,” he explains.

The restaurant offers a range of dishes—from authentic Puebla-style gorditas and poblano peppers to customer driven seafood options like snapper, tilapia, shrimp, and octopus, thanks to a chef trained in one of Mexico City’s premier seafood restaurants.

When asked about the future, Pablo is clear: he hopes to open another restaurant next year. igrating to the U.S.

For now, Lansing gets to enjoy not just his cooking, but his story—a tale that speaks to the heart of the  American Dream.

Music serenaded Lansing residents in the downtown’s Addado Park  all weekend, as crowds gathered to celebrate culture at the second annual Lansing Fiesta and Carnival.  As weekend temperatures hit a high of mid-90’s with a blazing welcome into the summer season, the grueling heat didn’t stop attendees as they danced, drank and ate authentic fare and Carnival food at the event. The Fiesta ran through June 19-22 and also included a lineup of entertainment by local talent.

The Lansing Fiesta and Carnival was organized by Daniel Ferreyra and Tony Alvarez who sought out to create an experience that brings together the local community.

With music performances featuring the sounds of DJ Mingo and DJ Adrian Lopez to Folkorio dance performances and an elote eating contest, the local community did not let the heat deter them from coming out to celebrate culture with food, music, entertainment and even carnival rides.

The event was one part cultural fest and one part carnival with classic carnival rides, games and treats like cotton candy.

The Fiesta opened its doors on Thursday with performances from DJ Sinsation who took charge of music for most of the night as Fiesta-goers danced after the sun set until the event closed at midnight.

Former lead vocalist of Grupo Aldaco, a band that was based in the Lansing area, Jenny Albarez Peña, performed the National Anthem, just as the evening got off to a start.

“I was born and raised in Lansing, visiting from Texas for the summer,” she said. “What a great way to spend time with loved ones and the community at this family event.”

Albarez Peña, who said singing at the event was an honor, also performed on Thursday and Friday evening with a special guest, her uncle Esteban Vilarreal.

“Although I still experience nerves when singing solo, I believe my Uncle Esteban would agree that the feeling of excitement takes over, especially when we’re able to connect with the audience,” she said.

Later that evening, attendees were treated to a performance by Fantasia Ballet Folklorico, kicking off the various groups of dancers who took to the stage during the Fiesta weekend.

Bright flashes of yellow, blue and green skirts with big arm movements captivated the audience as the dancers performed in Ranchero style dresses and other traditional Folklorico wear.

Friday followed much of the same lineup, but with a performance from Grupo Fiesta and a taco eating contest featuring a $100 cash prize for the crowned winner.

On Saturday, attendees enjoyed more music and food with two contests during the night–an elote and a chicken wing eating contest.

And the event closed on Sunday evening with a free car giveaway, courtesy of Empire Motors of Lansing.

In addition to this programming, the Lansing Fiesta also featured food from Taqueria El Chaparrito and Lucy’s Kitchen, among other restaurants and food trucks. Over 100 businesses showed up at the event and a variety of local vendors gathered to sell authentic products and promote their businesses.

Special to the Lansing News Wire

LANSING, Mich. – Today, the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) announced the 23 Michigan organizations that will receive grant funding from the Trusted Connector Grant program, which provide grants to organizations such as chambers of commerce and other member-based organizations that engage with under-represented small businesses and/or tech-based entrepreneurs across the state. Additionally, a Detroit-based company will receive grant funding from the Entrepreneur Support Grant program.

In total, the $6.8 million in Trusted Connector Grants and a $2 million Entrepreneur Support Grant will allow the selected organizations to continue providing technical assistance programming, networking events, mentorship, and outreach to small businesses throughout Michigan.

“We are invested in the success of Michigan’s small businesses and are committed to doing everything we can to provide them with the resources they need for growth,” said MEDC Senior Vice President of Small Business & Talent Amy Rencher. “Economic development draws on the power of community, and the organizations selected to receive Trusted Connector Grant funds and our Entrepreneur Support Grant program awardee, Dunamis Charge, represent the strength of the state’s small business environment and entrepreneurial spirit. We cannot do this work alone, and we are proud to serve alongside them.”

Trusted Connector Grant

The Trusted Connector grants total $6.8 million in funding to support small business development initiatives across the state. This funding opportunity provides grants to organizations such as chambers of commerce and other member-based organizations that regularly convene and engage under-represented small businesses and/or tech-based entrepreneurs through technical assistance programming, networking events, mentorship, and outreach.

While most grantees have multi-county service areas, several grantees will serve entrepreneurs statewide. The funding opportunity was highly competitive, with 44 eligible applications demonstrating $15 million in need across the state to increase awareness of resources available to entrepreneurs and to provide expert, culturally competent technical assistance.

The 23 grantees are established organizations skilled in meeting critical competitiveness and growth needs of Michigan small businesses in the areas of capital access preparedness; increasing digital acumen; promoting awareness of, and connection to, technology and innovation resources; facilitating expert-led mentorship and networking opportunities; providing and/or facilitating one-on-one coaching; providing and/or facilitating workshops and seminars with industry leaders; and providing appropriate referrals to Michigan entrepreneurial ecosystem partners to meet specific needs of the entrepreneur, according to industry or growth acceleration.

Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber (SMRC) is a 501(c)6 non-profit, business advocacy and collective-impact organization serving Berrien, Cass, and Van Buren Counties. As the largest chamber in the region, SMRC leverages its extensive network to strengthen regional assets, advocate for regional priorities and cultivate an economic ecosystem that prepares the region for future opportunity.

The organization is receiving $250,000 in Trusted Connector grant funds to support and expand its Chamber Growth Alliance (CGA) model within Berrien County. SMRC will hire three new CGA Directors to deliver on-the-ground business development services in these currently underserved communities, including the HUBZones of census tract 213 (Berrien Springs) and the Pokagon Reservation. By embedding dedicated CGA Directors within these communities, SMRC will create a stronger, more inclusive economic ecosystem that empowers businesses, attracts investment, and lays the groundwork for lasting prosperity.

“The Trusted Connector grant is a transformative investment that allows the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber to expand our Chamber Growth Alliance model into underserved areas of Berrien County, embedding dedicated support directly into local communities,” said Resource Development Director Molly McFadden. “This funding will strengthen our ability to connect small businesses with critical resources, drive inclusive economic growth, and create a more resilient and diverse regional economy.”

Headquartered in Southeast Michigan, the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce (APACC) is a nonprofit business organization committed to advancing economic growth, business success and professional development across industries. APACC connects corporations, entrepreneurs, small business owners and professionals to strategic resources and meaningful relationships that help drive innovation and strengthen Michigan’s economic landscape.

APACC is receiving $250,000 in Trusted Connector grant funding; with this award, the organization will focus on enhancing supplier readiness, expanding technical assistance and deepening access to capital and mentorship – empowering small businesses to grow, compete and lead in today’s evolving economy. One program APACC intends to launch will expand multilingual resources to break down barriers, enhancing accessibility to APACC’s Multilingual Small Business Resource Guide and ensuring non-English-speaking business owners can navigate funding, procurement, and legal resources.

“The Trusted Connector Grant strengthens the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce’s commitment to supporting small business owners, especially those shaped by resilience, innovation, and cultural insight,” said APACC Executive Director Duc Nguyen Abrahamson. “This investment expands our reach across Michigan, ensuring that diverse entrepreneurs have access to the tools and relationships they need to thrive, contributing to the long-term growth and stability of our state’s economy.”

The National Veteran Business Development Council (NVBDC) was established in 2013 to address the growing need to identify and certify both service disabled and veteran-owned businesses in the government and commercial marketplace. As a statewide awardee, the NVBDC will use its $300,000 Trusted Connector grant to scale and implement its global growth initiatives. The organization plans to extend its certification internationally to help veteran entrepreneurs in exporting and importing industries access U.S. and foreign markets. This funding will support expatriate NVBDC-certified veteran-owned businesses by training them to connect and integrate into multinational corporate supplier diversity programs.

“Support from the Trusted Connector Grant will allow the National Veteran Business Development Council to expand our certification, training, and global trade programs, providing critical access to corporate and government supply chains for veteran-owned businesses,” said Founder and CEO Keith King. “This funding directly enhances our ability to drive economic growth, create jobs, and empower small businesses across Michigan and beyond.”

Entrepreneur Support Grant

The Entrepreneur Support Grant is a $2 million follow-on funding opportunity for exceptional performance from a previous awardee of the Inclusive Entrepreneurship Support Grant. Dunamis Charge, an EV charging solutions company based in Detroit, was selected for this opportunity.

Founded in 2020 by a team of passionate engineers and entrepreneurs, Dunamis Charge recognized the critical need for convenient and reliable EV charging infrastructure. With Michigan at the forefront of the automotive and mobility industries, the company envisioned a unique opportunity to contribute to the state’s economic diversification and environmental sustainability. The company has deployed over 100 public and private charging ports across Michigan.

With the award funding, Dunamis Charge will continue to manufacture safe, reliable, durable EV charging systems that will be deployed on a national and international scale using a local Michigan workforce and predominantly Michigan-based supply chain.

The award funding will specifically be used for:

Expanding EV charging infrastructure: Dunamis Charge plans to deploy an additional 250 level 2 and fast-charging stations across Michigan, focusing on urban areas and key travel corridors. This will significantly reduce range anxiety and encourage broader EV adoption, particularly among low- and moderate-income communities.

Creating jobs: The project will generate at least 25 new full-time positions in installation, maintenance, and customer service, with a focus on unemployed and underemployed Michigan residents.

Enhancing community well-being: By reducing reliance on fossil fuels, Dunamis Charge contributes to cleaner air and a healthier environment for all Michiganders. This aligns with key MI Healthy Climate Plan objectives, such as creating good-paying jobs, spurring economic development, making Michigan energy independent, and protecting and improving the health of Michiganders.

Support from the Michigan Legislature:

“Ongoing support for targeted and thoughtful small business initiatives, such as the Trusted Grant Connector and the Entrepreneurship Support Grant, will contribute to a more diverse and thriving economy in Michigan,” said Senate Appropriations Chair Sarah Anthony (D-Lansing). “I am optimistic these investments will have lasting benefits on our communities in the years ahead, particularly in terms of economic opportunities for women and people of color, who have historically faced barriers in accessing these resources.”

“As Chair of the Labor and Economic Opportunity budget, I know that providing entrepreneurs with wraparound supports for every stage of their business promotes greater economic equity and empowers business leaders to continue to build a stronger entrepreneurial environment,” said State Sen. Mary Cavanagh (D-Redford). “Congratulations to the grant recipients and I look forward to your continued contributions to our local communities and the entire state of Michigan.”

“Congratulations to the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce, Madison Heights Hazel Park Chamber of Commerce, Sisters Code, and Venture Catalysts, on receiving MEDC Trusted Connector grants! Supporting underrepresented small businesses and ensuring they have the networks, technical assistance, and mentorship to succeed is so critical for the ability of our communities across Michigan to thrive,” said State Sen. Stephanie Chang (D-Detroit). ”I am thrilled that these hardworking organizations will be able to take their efforts to the next level, thanks to MEDC’s grant program.”

“I’m proud to see the Southwest Michigan Regional Chamber Foundation receive this significant investment through the MEDC’s Trusted Connector Grant Program,” said State Rep. Joey Andrews (D-St. Joseph). “This $250,000 award recognizes the Foundation’s outstanding work supporting small businesses and entrepreneurs in our region, especially those that have been historically underrepresented. Small businesses are the backbone of our local economy, and this funding will help strengthen the resources, mentorship and connections they need to thrive in an increasingly competitive and tech-driven environment. I’m glad to see MEDC use the appropriation from our strategically crafted, balanced budget to launch this impactful program, one that directly supports local economic growth and entrepreneurial success in communities like ours.”

“ACCESS plays a major role in helping entrepreneurs turn their ideas into sustainable businesses by providing the tools, guidance, and support they need to thrive,” said State Rep. Alabas Farhat (D-Dearborn). “I’m proud to have an organization in my district that is so dedicated to supporting the hard-working people running our small businesses. I congratulate ACCESS on this award and look forward to working with them as they continue providing crucial support for local entrepreneurs.”

“I applaud the MEDC for investing in two excellent organizations in my district with track records of helping small businesses thrive,“ said State Rep. Sharon MacDonell (D-Troy), whose district is home to the Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce and the National Veteran Business Development Council. “These organizations are trusted leaders in Metro Detroit’s small business community. This investment from the state will help them to assist more small business owners in achieving their American dream.”

“I’m thrilled to see Lean Rocket Lab once again recognized as a leader in small business development and innovation,” said State Rep. Kathy Schmaltz (R-Jackson). “This new grant will allow them to expand their reach and continue providing critical resources that help local entrepreneurs succeed. Supporting small businesses is one of the best ways we can invest in our communities and grow Jackson’s economy.”

“Michigan’s small businesses are the lifeblood of our economy, and they deserve support to build them up,” said State Rep. Joe Tate (D-Detroit). “I secured funding for this year’s Trusted Connector Grants as Speaker of the House last term, and I’m excited to see the impact these organizations will have in helping cultivate local businesses, especially in my hometown of Detroit. The Entrepreneur Support grant is an example of continuing investment. We’re committed to making sure Michigan businesses don’t just launch, but soar. Congratulations to all grantees!”

“These grants help support vital small business development in our local communities and the great service of organizations like the National Veteran Business Development Council. When we work to strengthen small businesses and our local economies, we build stronger communities for families across our state,” said State Sen. Michael Webber (R-Rochester Hills).

Special to the Lansing News Wire

Oona Velasquez, center core specialist for surgical services at McLaren Greater Lansing, has been recognized as one of the Lansing Latino Health Alliance’s 2024 Outstanding Hispanic/Latino Caregivers. The award was presented to Velasquez, among McLaren leadership and coworkers, along with her family and friends, at the Lansing Latino Health Alliance ceremony on Tuesday, April 1, 2025.

This award is given annually to a caregiver who has made a significant impact in the life of a patient, exceeded expectations in carrying out their responsibilities, and demonstrated exceptional professionalism in the workplace. Velasquez was nominated for the award by her co-workers, recognizing her outstanding achievements in these areas.

Inspired by her mother’s career as a NICU nurse, Velasquez knew she wanted to do something in the medical field, and she has now worked at McLaren for over 12 years. Though initially unsure of her specific role, she was certain that health care would allow her to make a meaningful impact on her community, even outside of direct patient care. When she came to McLaren, she found the surgical services department and fell in love with the importance of her job and the people she worked with, who helped guide her to where she is today.

Oona Velasquez was named Lansing Latino Health Alliance’s 2024 Outstanding Hispanic/Latino Caregivers

“I look forward to going to work every day,” said Velasquez. “What I love most is the people that I work with and their dedication. Every day, I see the pride they have in what they do and the care they give and show for our patients and the support they give to me; it has greatly impacted my career.”

Velasquez’s co-workers describe her as the engineer, coordinator, and liaison for surgical services. She keeps track of sterile and nonsterile instruments coming and going between the operating room and the sterile processing department, prioritizing and timing sterilized items for use throughout the day and ensuring transitions in the operating room are seamless and carried out without delay. Velasquez is known within her department for her kindness and eagerness to step in and help where it is needed.

Velasquez grew up in the Lansing area and is proud to continue to support her community through her career.

“I was very surprised to have been nominated for this award and I am honored to be recognized,” said Velasquez. “I grew up in this area, and I love this community, so I’m thankful that I can do something that has a positive impact.”

McLaren is proud to recognize Oona Velasquez and her outstanding care for our community.

The Lansing Latino Health Alliance was founded as an advocacy organization in 2003 with the mission of raising the health status of Latinos in the greater Lansing area. Since 2003, the Alliance has informed the community and policymakers of health discrepancies and health needs of Latinos, advocated for change and improvement, and testified before legislative committees on these issues. The Alliance regularly collaborates with Lansing hospitals on various projects.

Archways to Opportunity releases new Impact Report, quantifying its impact on economic opportunity and educational advancement for more than 90,000 crew members

In one of its biggest hiring pushes in years, McDonald’s and its franchisees expect to hire up to 375,000 restaurant employees across the country this summer. This comes as the Golden Arches expands our restaurant footprint by 900 new U.S. restaurants by 2027 and prepares to serve more customers over the summer months.

For 70 years, the Golden Arches and its franchisees have been a foundational employer for workers at the start of their careers – offering more than just a paycheck. 1 in 8 Americans have worked at a McDonald’s restaurant and gained essential workplace skills like teamwork, responsibility, and customer service, while also having the chance to further their education. Through the McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity program (Archways), restaurant employees are given the resources to create a pathway to advancement both within the company and beyond.

“I often think about the time I spent working in our restaurants as a General Manager, and it was immediately clear that crew members are the heart and soul of this brand,” said Joe Erlinger, President, McDonald’s USA. “They go above and beyond to take care of our customers, and it’s our job to take care of and create opportunities for them. When you put on an apron for a shift at McDonald’s, you’re building skills you’ll carry with you for life.”

Since its launch in 2015, McDonald’s and its franchisees have invested over $240 million in Archways to Opportunity and helped over 90,000 crew members earn their high school diploma, receive college tuition assistance, learn English as a second language and access education and career advising services.

who earned her high school diploma through Archways to Opportunity

“Seventy years as a brand, and ten years into Archways to Opportunity, we’re reminded that one of the greatest impacts we can make is providing access to opportunity,” said Michael Gonda, Senior Vice President and Chief Impact Officer, North America. “Behind every counter and Drive Thru window is a story of someone building skills, pursuing education, or working towards their future ambition. These stories–in thousands of communities across the country–reinforce that McDonald’s is more than a restaurant: it’s an open door for so many getting their start and a place where potential takes root.”

To commemorate Archways’ decade of impact, McDonald’s conducted a survey of current and former Archways to Opportunity participants and highlighted the findings in this 10th Anniversary Report. Participants said Archways led to:

  • Unlocked Economic Potential: 80% believed Archways created more economic opportunities for them
  • Professional Advancement: 64% said Archways helped them get a promotion more quickly
  • New Doors Opened: 72% said Archways created new job opportunities for them
  • Generational Firsts: 46% of Archways participants who earned a college degree were first- generation college students
  • Career Transformation: 75% said Archways helped them pursue careers in new fields or industries

Just as important, Archways to Opportunity participants said the program restored their belief in themselves. Nearly 9 in 10 participants who were surveyed said the program gave them greater confidence in their skills and abilities. That’s due, in large part, to the overwhelming support of McDonald’s franchisees who have invested time and money to ensure these resources are available. But it goes beyond that. For many participants, it’s about having someone in their corner who believes they can achieve anything.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of the Archways program is witnessing participants rediscover their self-confidence. I see this transformation in my teams every day,” said David Costa, McDonald’s Owner/Operator in Florida. “Supporting our people isn’t just the right thing to do—it’s our passion. My fellow franchisees and I are deeply committed to empowering our crew to achieve their greatest potential.”

Lansing Athletics: A Fourth-Down Gamble That Keeps Paying Off

By RAUL GARCIA JR | Lansing News Wire

Just like the Detroit Lions aren’t afraid to take risks on fourth down, neither is Al Salas, the owner and operator of Lansing Athletics, a long-standing retail staple now located inside the Lansing Mall. For over four decades, Salas has been suiting up Mid-Michigan in custom sportswear and authentic team gear, betting on bold business moves — and winning.

Founded 42 years ago on Lansing’s Southside, Lansing Athletics began as a small custom apparel business and has grown into a trusted source for screen printing, embroidery, vinyl printing, and official team merchandise. Salas relocated the shop to the mall, where it now operates out of a 1,000-square-foot storefront, offering everything from hoodies and jackets to t-shirts, pajamas, and hats — all customizable and available for fans of professional, college, and local high school teams.

“I started this store a long time ago because I saw the need in Lansing for a place that carried merchandise for all teams,” Salas said. “Even though I’ve been in business for 42 years, a lot of people still don’t know everything we carry — so I welcome them to come visit us at Lansing Athletics.”

A Texas native, Salas says his passion for Detroit teams didn’t start at birth, but rather out of love. In the early ‘90s, he swapped his Dallas Cowboys loyalty to impress his future wife, a die-hard Lions fan. “She didn’t like me that much the day we met because I was wearing a Cowboys t-shirt,” Salas joked. “The next day, I showed up to her job in a Lions hat and shirt — and the rest is history.”

That loyalty translated into business, too. Last year, Salas went “all in” on the Detroit Lions, betting on their breakout season by heavily stocking Lions merchandise — a decision that paid off as fan demand surged. “Business picked up, and I’m happy God blessed me with the vision to double down,” he said.

Lansing Athletics isn’t just a store — it’s a community hub, especially for local schools, sports teams, and small businesses looking for custom gear.

As a proud Latino-owned business, it’s also listed in the Mid-Michigan Latino Business Directory, further cementing its connection to the community.

Salas remains grateful for the loyalty of his customers — both old and new. “It’s because of them that we’re still here,” he said. “Thank you for shopping local. Thank you for shopping Lansing Athletics.”

For more information or to browse their selection, visit www.lansingathletics.com or stop by the store at 5330 W. Saginaw Hwy in the Lansing Mall.
